Genesis 3d is an open software game engine. This means that it is pretty much free to use but there are a couple of simple rules. You can make and sell your own games with the software but you can't just modify the code for the engine haphazardly. Also, when the game you create starts up a Genesis 3d splash screen comes up. THis screen has to stay! If you want your game to not have this screen you have to pay a license fee. If you are serious about game making with genesis 3d check out their licensing agreement. The game design software is a workspace that you start up and work in. This image here shows the workspace. There are four different views of your game world. The blue square is a room that we have created. In this work space we can quickly create rooms, add textures, lights, creatures, players and all sorts of things. We also add more rooms, outdoors, sky, doorways and just about anything else you can imagine. That's the whole point - anything you can imagine is possible! This is called WYSIWIG development (WYSIWIG = what you see is what you get). With the click of a button a room is created then we can click/hold and drag the square to make it bigger or smaller. Then we click to add stuff to it or to color and texture it. This really takes a lot of the programming out of game making and frees you up to do the creative work of making a game. Butthis doesn't mean that it is a cakewalk. There is still lots of work to do and lots to learn but don't be disheartened I will show you how to do it. Let's Begin the tutorial by getting, downloading and setting up the software |
