AMD has released a new chipset and processor that is taking gaming to a whole new level -seriously!!Here is a basic comparison between movies and video games: Movies are never interactive and Video Games never look as good as movies But you know, as well as I do that one half of this equation is going to be shot down in a big ball of flame. That's right, we know that eventually video games are going to look just as good as movies. Someday we are going to be playing games that look absolutely real in every way! Just plot it out on a graph and you can see it happening now. How far have we come from the days of atari and pong? Well, to my point here. AMD has just announced the release of its new chipset and processor code named the RV770 which has been codenamed teraFLOPS graphics chip. They are also calling what is going on "Cinema 2.0" and I have got to tell you that they are not kidding. This new graphic capability is simply flabbergasting!! Here is their tagline for it: Cinema 2.0: The Next Chapter in the Ultimate Visual Experience™ Story You can read more about this on AMD website here: Cinema 2.0 They also have some neat videos. Want to see what it looks like? Here is a youtube video that gives you a good look at what is now possible. And remember, it looks like a video camera filming in a city but it's not. Its real time rendered graphics! Simply amazing. Now it's going to take some time for developers to take advantage of this new processor and chipset but boy the stuff that we are going to be seeing will be amazing. About the new Graphics Cards that the Chipset and processor will be in: AMD says it will sell two models starting June 25: The ATI Radeon HD 4850 will cost $200 and the more powerful ATI Radeon HD 4870 will cost $300.
A little Note about developing games and graphics Developers and designers of video games have for years now always had to make some trade-offs. They had to decide if they wanted more realistic looking games or action that is smoother and faster. More realistic looking games meant slower response and slower graphics. This next generation of chips is having a dramatic impact on that problem. Now we are talking about no sacrificing between the two. More resources The AMD Press Release about this new chipset |
